Nigeria Premier League changes name to avoid legal tussle

The Nigeria Premier League, NPL has changed its name to Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL to avoid further legal battle with its sponsor.
This was part of a resolution reached between club owners and the Interim Management Board, IMB of the League led by Nduka Irabor last Friday.
Investigation revealed that the IMB changed the name from NPL because it is in a legal battle with its sponsor, Total Promotions.
Recall that the Rumpson Baribote-led board was sacked because of his inability to attract another title sponsor to the league which was hijacked by Total Promotions.
Our findings also disclosed that all efforts for the Baribote board to settle with Total Promotions proved abortive hence his inability for new title sponsor to come in.
For the NPFL to avoid further legal battle and bring in title sponsor, the IMB decided to have a change of name.

However, the 2012/ 2013 season may still commence without a sponsor despite the announcement of a resolution of the sponsorship controversy between two mobile telecommunication companies, Globacom and MTN.
Meanwhile, the league will commence on March 9 and the draws which also took place on that same day revealed that last year’s NPL runners-up, Enugu Rangers, will host six-time champions, Enyimba, in another 'oriental derby' to open the league on Saturday.
Others are Heartland vs Nembe City; Nassarawa United vs El Kanemi Warrior; Akwa United vs Dolphin; Sharks vs Warri Wolves; Wikki Tourists vs Kano Pillars; Sunshine vs Kaduna United; Bayelsa United vs Lobi Stars; 3SC vs Gombe United; ABS FC vs Kwara United.
