Works, Arc. Mike Onolememen when he presented a memorandum on the “Emergency
Repairs on the existing Niger Bridge” to the Senate Committee on Works.
Arc. Onolememen disclosed that the ministry
issued a letter of intent for rehabilitation works of the existing Niger River
Bridge at Onitsha to Messrs Matiere-Johnson Consortium of France.
He claimed that in the bidding for the 2nd
Niger Bridge, they emerged as the reserved bidder. The minister said the
company is expected to move to the site of the bridge within 30 days.
Recall that the minister in a radio programme
said work on the 2nd Niger Bridge will commence at the end of the
first quarter of the year.
Messrs Matiere-Johnson Consortium is also working
hand-in-hand with Messrs ICECON Nigeria Limited to review and maintain some
bridges across the country.
Onolememen further said, “The ministry has
directed Messrs Matiere-Johnson Consortium to liaise with the Bridge consultant,
Messrs ICECON Nigeria Limited, and to review their submission to ascertain the
required scope of maintenance works. This is due to their famed expertise in
steel bridges around the world.”
