Kogi United in a training session |
The battle of United which is slated
for Township Stadium in Kaduna today by 4pm will be the hosts' first game at
home having not played the earlier fixtures due to Giwa FC's expulsion from the
'most important' league in Nigeria.
Kogi United left back, Kingsley
Emeka Iwuji has talked up his club's chances of getting a meaningful result in
their Matchday 5 of the Nigeria National League, NNL encounter on Sunday.
Iwuji who has been in fine form for
Kogi United this season noted that his side would approach the match with all
sense of seriousness as their hosts would be under pressure being their
season's opener in front of their home fans.
The Kaduna born player also talked
about his side's promotion ambition as he said it is long overdue for United to
compete at the apex league.
“This is the best time for us to
face Kaduna United, we want to put everything into it to claim a good result. The
mentality and spirit is high, it is their first home game so they will be under
pressure. They know it is going to be a difficult match and they know Kogi
United will give them a tough match, I hope we can play them without much in our
heads except a good game to claim the full points,” he noted.
Iwuji continued, "The team has
really improved unlike before, so the target this term is promotion because we
are way long due for it, nothing but such, but there is no need to put pressure
on ourselves by now, we will be taking each games as they come, you know NNL is
a funny league, a win or point on the road will put you in good stead to promotion
while failing to win at home becomes a problem, we will work hard for Kogi
United to get to the premier league stage by the special grace of God.
“This season will be different for
us, unlike before when we play to stay and establish, now we have a target
which is to gain promotion, I think we have a good team that can achieve that,
with hard work, determination and God's favor.
Asked about the influence of their
new coach, Tunde Abdulrahman on the team since he took charge of the Confluence
State club, he heaped praises on the new gaffer who he described as father
figure with high technical experience.
He is a very quiet man, for the time
being, he has been putting some finishing touches in our game couple with the
fact that his assistant coach, Musa Abubakar Manaman has been doing a good job
before he came.
“We have been enjoying a good
working relationship with him, he is a nice man, very focus and open with his
approach to things he want from us, and we have been living up to his
expectation, we hope to learn more from him to help achieve our goals
individually and as a team, we just want to give him the best, to feel
motivated and be happy he met the best set of players he has ever worked
with," he said.
The match will also be Coach Tunde
Abdulrahman's first on the road after joining the Lokoja based side penultimate
week ago.
