Penalize those responsible for building collapse - Minister

Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Ms Amal Pepple has once again charged the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria, CORBON to go after those responsible for building collapse by ensuring on the issue of National Building Code, NBC.
Pepple gave the charge this afternoon when she inaugurated the 5th board of the CORBON at the Federal Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, FMLHUD headquarters in Mabushi, Abuja.
The minister said, “I hope you are working on the building code. It is important to impose sanction on those who are responsible for collapse, they should be penalized. If there is no sanction, we are still going to be where we are.”
She also charged CORBON on the need to tackle unhealthy practices which she enumerated to include: lack of safety standards on building sites, use of inferior building materials, poor house quality and design, prevalence of unskilled artisans and non-professionals and lack of maintenance standards.

“These anomalies have lingered on for a considerable time because of the failure of professional and regulatory bodies to be committed to the achievement of the highest professional standards in the building industry,” she said.
Responding, the chairman of CORBON, Prof Kabir Bala said they are going to do everything within the ambit of the law to justify the confidence reposed in them on the appointment. He said the responsibilities given them are enormous and critical to the development of the economy. “The housing sector is critical to the transformation agenda of government.”
CORBON is established to regulate and control the practice of the building profession in all its aspects and ramifications in Nigeria.

Minister, Journalists at loggerheads over largesse



Facts are beginning to emerge from the Good Governance Tour presently going on in some parts of the country.
We authoritatively gathered that the journalists covering the tour are at loggerheads with the minister of Information, Labaran Maku over the largesse given to them by some state governors and ministers.

One of the journalists, who confided in our correspondent, alleged that the minister always collect the largesse meant for the journalists, an action which does not go down well with the 'men with pen'.
He gave instance in Jos, Plateau state when they went to inspect a road construction by the Federal Ministry of Works.
Our source said when the ministry was not forthcoming about the largesse, Labaran asked his counterpart, the minister of State for Works, Amb. Bashir Yuguda about the largesse and pocket the money.
He also disclosed that when they went to some states in the East and southern parts of the country, the minister collected the money meant for journalists. He said some of his colleagues were contemplating confronting him on the largesse but the respect they have for him as a minister is what is causing the barrier.
It would be recalled that the Edo state governor, Adams Oshiomhole recently accused the minister of presenting him a proposal to sponsor his State’s Good Governance Tour which he turned down.
Many analysts have also condemned the activities of the minister of Information who they claimed is wasting tax payers’ money to fund a wasteful venture. Political Platform crew on AIT said if he is supposed to tour any project, it should be restricted to federal government projects.

NMFC will broaden access to mortgage financing

The Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Ms Amal Pepple said the Nigerian Mortgage and Finance Corporation, NMFC as announced by the federal government will broaden access to housing/mortgage finance in the country.
She made this statement at the inauguration ceremony of the board of the FMBN in Abuja yesterday.
Pepple said the announcement by President Goodluck Jonathan at the commemoration of the reclamation of 5,000,000 square meters of land for the Eko Atlantic City project, is one of the immediate measures being undertaken to broaden access to mortgage finance.
“The opening of this window is an additional incentive for the creation of a new pool of potential home owners through the facilitation of access to affordable mortgages,” she disclosed.
The minister however urged the FMBN to see to the completion of the President Goodluck Jonathan Legacy Estate, which she said will deliver affordable and high-quality housing through commercial funding as a model for replication by private and government-owned estate development companies.
“I urge you to develop alternative funding mechanisms and attract investments from local and global capital markets at costs and tenors matching the needs of mass housing delivery,” she added.
The new board of the FMBN is to be chaired by Chief Olabisi Ogunjobi. On his part, Ogunjobi said his board will do everything within their power to take the bank (FMBN) to greater height.

Nigeria to host CIGEPS

Nigeria will be hosting the next Regional Conference of Inter-Governmental Committee for Physical Education and Sports, CIGEPS.
This disclosure was made by the minister of Sports and chairman of the National Sports Commission, NSC, Bolaji Abdullaji this afternoon at the meeting of the Ministers in Charge of Sports in Supreme Council for Sports in Africa, SCSA in Abuja.
Abdullahi said the CIGEPS will take place between 5th and 6th of March, 2013.
He however disclosed that the CIGEPS meeting in Abuja is to discuss the preliminary draft by the Programme Committee of MINEPS for submission to the extra-ordinary session of CIGEPS holding in Baku, Azerbaijan from March 13-15, 2013.
CIGEPS was established in 1978 to promote the role and value of sport and its inclusion in public policy.

Federal Roads Authority to manage road infrastructure




Minister of Works, Arc. Mike Onolememen said the on-going road sector reforms which will lead to the emergence of a Federal Roads Authority, FRA will empower the authority to take over the professional management of roads infrastructure nationwide which will also include roads design, construction, rehabilitation and maintenance.
The Minister mentioned this while conducting the National Good Governance Tour Team led by the Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, through the construction of an additional new 25km carriageway from Agbede and passing through Ewu, Irrua, Ekpoma to Iruekpen in Edo State.
He said roads maintenance which is the present duty of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), will be under a department in the authority.
The carriageway of 7.30m width with 2.75m outer shoulders form part of the Benin end of the dualistion of Abuja-Lokoja-Okene-Auchi-Benin road. The dualisation of the Agbede-Ewu section of this highway and the construction of a flyover at Ewu junction.
Kaduna-Niger road
Onolememen said it will reduce the fatal accidents that occur frequently there resulting in loss of lives and properties. The contractor, Dantata and Sawoe Nigeria Limited has since the flag-off on the14th February, 2013 mobilized fully to site and commenced earth works.
Arc. Mike Onolememen at the inspection promised Nigerians that the delivery of the road in April 2016 will be a reality especially with the availability of funds from the Subsidy Reinvestment Programme (SURE-P).
The Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, thanked the Federal Ministry of Works for its commitment to the provision of good motorable roads and assured Nigerians that this administration will stop at nothing to ensure that the road sector reforms is successful as it is designed for positive results.

Yobo is no more relevant in Eagles – JP




Former Super Eagles coach, James Peter said captain of the team, Joseph Yobo is no longer relevant in the team.

James Peter made this disclosure this at the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF secretariat yesterday.
Peter who adviced the technical bench led by Stephen Keshi to drop the Fenerbache defender in the match against Cote d’Ivoire and the remaining matches at the just-concluded African Cup of Nations, AFCON in South Africa, said Yobo has nothing to offer the team.
The former Assistant Secretary General on technical matter of the NFF, said if he were to be the coach, he will drop Yobo.
“Yobo has done his best for the country. If I am the coach, I won’t play Yobo in the World Cup including the FIFA Confederation Cup in June, also in Brazil,” he said.
He advised that since the former Everton player has won the AFCOn trophy, he should just forget the national team.
