Despite coming runners-up in the
just-concluded FIBA U-16 female basketball championship in Madagascar, the National
Sports Commission, NSC hosted the team to a rousing welcome.
Speaking at the event held at the Abuja
National Stadium Media Centre on Tuesday, the Director General of the NSC,
Alhassan Yakmut commended the girls for making Nigeria at the championship.
Yakmut however promised not only to give them
all the necessary support but also to ensure that the team gets early
preparation for the world championship. Part of his promises includes: a
special 30-day training camping at the newly-refurbish Goodluck Jonathan Athletes
Hostel at the Package B of the Abuja National Stadium.

His words, “We are proud of you because you
have made us proud and I want to assure everybody that has passion and love for
sports that change has come to National Sports Commission and the change is not
ceremonial. Before the venue and date for the world championship are determined,
the girls will be camp for 30-day at the new athlete hostel immediately
Nigerian contingent departs for the All African Games.”
The Nigerian girls finished second after
losing their Malian counterparts but they qualified to participate in the 2017
FIBA Under-17 World Championship.
It would be recalled that three Nigerian players
were banned for alleged age falsification. Despite that, they went unbeaten before
they crashed to Mali who incidentally are the three time champions by 57-46.
